Every school year kids look forward to picking out a new backpack, whether it’s covered with superheroes, princesses, or cool designs. While children focus on what’s on the outside, parents should consider the weight of the contents inside. Many kids tote too much which can put a strain on the shoulders, back, and neck.
1. Proper Weight Distribution
Ensure the backpack weight does not exceed 10-15% of the child’s body weight to prevent strain on the back and shoulders.
2. Adjust the Straps
Use both shoulder straps and adjust them to fit snugly, distributing weight evenly across the shoulders and back.
3. Use Waist and Chest Straps
If available, use waist and chest straps to further distribute the load and reduce stress on the spine.
4. Pack Heaviest Items Closest to the Back
Place heavy items towards the back of the backpack to maintain balance and prevent strain on the spine.
5. Organize Contents
Keep the backpack organized, with frequently used items easily accessible, reducing the need to overreach or strain the back.
6. Wear the Backpack High and Tight
Position the backpack high on the back and close to the body to minimize pressure on the lower back.
7. Lift the Backpack Safely
Use proper lifting techniques to pick up the backpack, bending at the knees rather than the waist.
8. Use Rolling Backpacks When Appropriate
For heavy loads, consider using a rolling backpack to reduce stress on the back and shoulders.
9. Limit Wear Time
Avoid wearing the backpack for extended periods; take breaks and remove it when unnecessary.
10. Inform Teachers and Parents
Encourage communication between teachers and parents about backpack weight and any discomfort experienced.
Wearing a backpack correctly can reduce the risk of discomfort, pain, and long-term spinal issues. As a result, students can concentrate better, maintain good health, and avoid potential injuries, leading to a more enjoyable and successful school experience.
